As parents of distracted children, such as those with ADHD or autism, we often wonder how we could contain our children’s excessive energy. We also ask ourselves a lot more questions like should we use only pharmaceutical help? Should we follow special diets or let them take nutritional supplements? Do they need to be disciplined more? If our child is born with ADHD or autism, it is common for us to get tired when we can’t control them. We might even get to a point where we get mad at them. But instead of punishing a child, refocus his attention to a physical activity to burn off excess energy and stimulate the mind to learn in order to resolve conflict.

How Does Exercise Do This?

Michael Phelps is a world-renowned swimmer and multiple-time Olympian. He is known to have ADHD, but because of his sport and constant exercise he was able to manage his condition without medication. Our distracted child could be like him. But how?

During exercise, our heart beats faster than normal, resulting in a faster blood flow throughout the body, particularly to the brain. When the blood flow is increased in the brain, endorphins are released into the body. Endorphins are known to control our mood and make us feel a pleasurable boost. The brain also releases dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin which acts like a little bit of Ritalin or Adderall, affecting a person’s ability to focus. This is a great help for ADHD children.

What Is The Best Exercise Choice?

Not generalizing, but distracted children perform better in individual sports like martial arts, dance, and gymnastics. These sports could also help them better because the child must concentrate on their movements in order to complete the routines correctly.

Our children should not be limited to those sports, however. They are perfectly capable of participating in team-oriented sports like baseball or football. We just have to watch them closely on these sports as their team-mates might not always react well to our children’s inattentiveness and social awkwardness. If our children didn’t feel welcome in a team, it might discourage them to try other team sports.
